Review: Nosotros Tequila Reposado (2020)
Review: Nosotros Tequila Reposado (2020)
Nosotros’ initial tequila — a blanco — was nice enough to make our Top 10 Tequilas of the Year feature. Alas, we only sampled the silver at the time. Now we get to take a second spin with Nosotros by reviewing its other 100% agave expression, a reposado. (An anejo expression remains unproduced.)
Let’s dive in to this bottling, which is unusually aged in French oak barrels (not American oak) for a lengthy 11 months — making it borderline anejo in age.
While Nosotros Blanco is clean and pepper-driven, this reposado is a showcase of the barrel. Sultry with spice and brown sugar, it is sweet and vibrant on the nose, lush with complex notes of cinnamon, hibiscus, green banana, and almond nougat. The racy agave pushes through the vanilla and milk chocolate notes, but the spice is effectively kept in balance.
On the palate, much of the same character is evident. It’s heavy with a brown sugar — almost flan-like — sweetness, quite rich and unctuous. Loads of baking spice, a mix of florals, and some coconut notes emerge — along with a light red berry note that offers a surprising refreshing character amidst all the sugar. The finish is reminscent of churros dipped in bittersweet chocolate — the perfect conclusion to any Mexican delight.
It may say reposado on the bottle, but tequila pros will immediately peg this as an anejo — plan accordingly.
