Review: Misunderstood Ginger Spiced Whiskey

Misunderstood isn’t too hard to understand: It makes just one product, whiskey flavored with ginger and other spices. The product, subtitled as “Legend One,” is described as “an 80 proof American blended whiskey distilled from Midwest grains, aged in used American oak barrels, and proudly infused & bottled in Kentucky.”

To start with, the ginger is visible in the whiskey, as (well-ground-up) solids collect at the bottom of the bottle when it’s left to sit for a while. As you pour a glass, notes of pure, fresh-baked gingerbread immediately percolate to the fore. It’s not particularly whiskeylike, but it does feel a lot like Christmas is on the horizon. The palate shows a spicier side of the spirit that the nose would indicate, a crisp grind of both black pepper and red pepper atop a big slug of fresh ginger. The finish is equally racy, here taking a turn more toward gingersnap cookies than baked gingerbread.

All told, it’s fun (if straightforward) stuff — built for mixing with just about anything.

80 proof. Reviewed: Batch #6.
