Review: New Belgium Voodoo Ranger 1985 IPA

Everything old is new again, as New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger line takes a trip back to a time 30-some years before hazy IPAs were invented… with a hazy IPA. I don’t get it either, but at least the design on the can is appropriately retro. Flavored with Citra, Simcoe, and Cascade hops, it’s flavored with real mango to punch up the fruity element.

Concerned about the addition of fruit juice to your brew? To be sure, the mango is a straight up bomb on the palate, juicy and full of tropical flavors, and it does make one’s thoughts run to the beach. Pineapple isn’t far behind the mango puree, while the hops add an indistinct, vaguely citrus peel-like bitterness. I get some coconut cream on the finish, though there’s plenty of acidity in the overall production to make the beer plenty refreshing — though decidedly light on the hops.
