Review: Stags’ Leap WInery 2020 Chardonnay and 2019 Petite Sirah
The summertime releases from Napa’s Stags’ Leap Winery are upon us — one ready for the pool, the other for the grill.
2020 Stags’ Leap Winery Chardonnay Napa Valley – No surprises here, with this 2020 chardonnay pouring out notes of green apple and lemon curd, filtered through layers of vanilla-heavy oak. A guava character builds with time in glass, the later stages of the wine taking on a very creamy, slightly doughy quality. Some almond notes on the finish are a nice concluding touch. 2019 Stags’ Leap Winery Petite Sirah Napa Valley – Rich but not overblown and palate-killing the way so many petite sirah bottlings can be, this wine lays on notes of black fruit and dark chocolate, creating a seductive experience that is never short of immersive and thrilling. Notes of licorice and Christmas spices give the wine some texture and nuance, but that chocolate-driven core, running to cherry on the finish, is simply impossible not to fall in love with.
