Review: Kavalan Single Malt Whisky Vinho Barrique Cask Strength (2024)
Review: Kavalan Single Malt Whisky Vinho Barrique Cask Strength (2024)
Six years ago, Taiwan’s Kavalan re-launched the Single Cask Strength Series of its single malts, with high-proof versions of its four uniquely matured bottlings on tap. We didn’t review them at the time, but from what I can tell this was a semi-relaunch of the Solist series. Neither series however has been available since 2018, but now they’re back, at least for a limited time.
Unfortunately we only received one of the quartet for review, but it’s a new version of one of our favorites from the Solist lineup: Vinho Barrique, which is fully matured in used American oak wine barrels that have been toasted and re-charred.
Let’s dive in.
The STR-style wine cask effect can be polarizing, often drying out a whisky and leaving it lacking in depth. That’s not at all the case here, though, as the finished product is decidedly rich and rewarding. The nose is immersive with Christmassy notes, the same gingerbread and chocolate elements I noted in the Solist edition, touched with elements of black pepper and some deeper barrel char notes. Sweet and wine-heavy on the palate, the whisky soon showcases gentle oxidized notes as it meanders toward a nutty middle, hinting at licorice and polished wood. A touch of tobacco gives the finish a certain fireside note, though elements of cherry and strawberry perk up the sweetness.
Quite complex but never scattered, this is arguably the best Kavalan I’ve tried to date.
112.6 proof.

I was privileged enough to find one of these bottles while traveling abroad. It is one of the best finished single malts I’ve ever had. I highly recommend giving any Kavalan a try. They are well worth it.
