Review: Indri Dru Indian Single Malt

Last year we had our first taste of Piccadilly Distilleries’ whisky when we reviewed Indri Trini, followed by its 2023 Diwali Edition. Today we sample a new release. Indri Dru is a cask strength single malt whisky that has been aged exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels. This makes it quite different from Trini, which was aged in three different types of casks. The choice to age the release in a single type of cask and to bottle it at full strength should allow the character of the underlying whisky to shine through more clearly. Let’s give it a try.

The nose shows expressive ex-bourbon character, including vanilla, buttered corn, caramel, cereal malt, and a touch of lemon. The palate, however, is surprisingly different, hitting first with oodles of bright, tropical fruit, including raspberry, orange, mango, and guava. Notes of caramel and black pepper come next, along with a bit of an alcohol burn, followed by lightly drying wood. The various flavors come together well here, and I particularly enjoyed the finish, which marries caramel, wood, and mango notes that roll together then slowly disappear. Some water brings out more caramel on the nose and tempers the alcohol bite, but it detracts from the whisky’s bold flavors, and I found it’s better neat, despite the heat. Considering the quality, price, and proof, this bottle is a bargain worth seeking out.
