Review: Wines of Wine by Joe, 2024 Releases

Wines by Joe is a second label for Dobbes Family Wines — Joe being Joe Dobbes. These are Oregon-based wines from all over the state — and nothing in the mix priced above 20 bucks. We received a trio of wines from the current vintage for review. Thoughts follow.

2022 Wine by Joe Pinot Blanc Willamette Valley – Lemons meet peaches meet the tropics in this immediately effusive wine, which takes a quick detour into notes of white flowers after a few seconds on the palate. Increasingly aromatic with ample notes of perfumery, as the wine warms it takes a dusting of coconut and sprinkles it with notes of minerals and a pinch of saline, which brightens the whole thing up. A rare pinot blanc that drinks better 20 minutes after you take it out of the chiller. Great value. A- / $14

2021 Wine by Joe Pinot Gris Willamette Valley – A creamier than expected expression of pinot gris, with gentle lemon curd elements paired against white flowers and a hint of coconut. A light note of lavender and fresh linen gives the finish a brightness that lifts the back end of the wine, making for a nice little journey — doughy, creamy, and fruit-laden up front, then refreshing and floral in the end. I guess this is why people love pinot grigio so much. Another solid value wine — though the pinot blanc has more complexity. A- / $14

2021 Wine by Joe Pinot Noir Oregon – 2020 was Oregon’s big smoke year, but in tasting this pinot noir I could easily have been convinced otherwise. Boldly pungent with wood smoke, the wine works its way through layers of smoldering green tree limbs before hitting a vein of mixed fruits — blackberry and raspberry, later some black cherry elements. Eventually the smoke blows off a bit, but the damage is done. Even pegging this as pinot noir isn’t easy; I probably would have guessed zinfandel, and from an off year at that. C- / $19
