Review: Wines of Cowhorn Vineyards, Summer 2024 Releases
Nestled deep in the Applegate Valley region of Southern Oregon, just outside of Medford, Cowhorn Vineyards established itself around the turn of this century. Situated on over 100 acres near the Upper Applegate River, they emphasize biodynamic and sustainable farming practices. Located on similar lines of latitude as France’s Rhône River, they also grow varietals commonly associated with the European region. Today we’re opening three recent vintages reflecting these choices: a Viognier, a Grenache, and a Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre (GSM) blend.
2022 Cowhorn Viognier – Initially presenting as highly aromatic, with the glass filling with notes of jasmine and white flowers before punching up to lush lemon and tangerine. The palate has lots to love, with the floral and citrus notes rolling into nectarine, vanilla, and butter cookies towards the finish. Viognier lovers seeking a wine with depth and complexity will find no fault here. A- / $40
2021 Cowhorn Grenache – Gentle aromas of raspberry and cherry transition to a juicy palate full of pomegranate and citrus zest before earthy notes of leather, tobacco, and a lingering note of licorice linger about on the finish. Good acidity and polished tannins with a light body make this very accessible, and the shift between fruit and savory never fails to hold attention. It works well on its own but is an absolute delight when paired with something fresh off the grill. B+ / $50
2021 Cowhorn GSM – Consisting of 36% Grenache, 49% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre, this GSM is initially somewhat heavy, with cranberry and currant aromas. However, a few minutes in the glass reveals lighter notes of raspberry and cherry. The palate is equally as lively, with red fruit melding with layers of citrus zest and hibiscus as it develops. Polished tannins and good acidity deliver good structure and lead to a lingering, savory finish that sees the cranberry and a touch of sage deliver versatility and depth. This will be a crowd-pleasing wine once the cooler months arrive. A- / $40
