Review: 2023 Quinta de Fonte Souto Branco Alentejo DOC

We’ve covered the wines of Quinta da Fonte Souto on numerous occasions since its launch in 2017, and the latest vintage of this well-regarded wine (75% arinto and 25% verdelho) doesn’t rock the boat.

The winery is located on the Serra de São Mamede within Portalegre, a sub-region in the Alentejo, where 5111 acres of land includes both wine grapes and chestnuts at an elevation of 1640 feet to 3400 feet.

This white blend — a “branco” in Portuguese — immediately strikes with a melon-heavy attack that is complemented by somewhat tart, immature lemon and grapefruit peel. A touch of vanilla adds welcome, tempering sweetness, with vague aromas of baking spice emerging in time. A reprise of lemon on the finish comes across as slightly candied, with a floral honeysuckle quality adding some fragrant nuance. More of a summer-friendly wine, but it’s versatile enough for most seasons.
