Review: Lalo Tequila Blanco High Proof
Lalo Blanco is one of our favorite tequilas to emerge in recent years — and a follow-up expression is finally hitting the market. Surprisingly, it’s neither a reposado nor an anejo, but rather another blanco — specifically a high-proof version of its silver bottling bottled at 54% abv.
There doesn’t appear to be any difference in the production process here vs. the standard blanco aside from the bottling proof. Even the slight tinge of yellow is visible in the glass. Let’s give it a try.
Lalo Tequila Blanco High Proof Tasting Notes
Many of the classic characteristics of Lalo Blanco are still in effect here, starting with a familiar, enchanting nose that features elements of torched lemon peel and cracked pepper. The experience diverges from standard Lalo however by layering in a deeper earthiness, with a clearer nose of roasted agave — with a slightly mushroomy bent. The lemon citrus also has a sharper punch to it, weaving in notes of blood orange alongside. Altogether it’s quite enchanting and multi-faceted, offering more nuance than the typical blanco (and arguably even rack Lalo) has to offer.
While Lalo tasted neat feels quite easygoing, the High Proof version makes its presence known right away. Biting and punchy thanks to the extra punch of alcohol, this is clearly a boozy spirit albeit not one that ever feels overblown. Again it is freshly herbal and loaded with lemon and more white pepper, with a quiet and subtle layer of wet earth visible underneath. The creaminess of the standard blanco isn’t visible here; this is bigger and more in-your-face, though the bright notes of citrus remain omnipresent, as does that secondary layer of gentle earth, a classic part of the Lalo Blanco experience. The finish evokes a clearer lime leaf quality, slightly floral.
As with rack Lalo, I really loved this tequila and found it hard to put down — though it ultimately reveals itself to be a somewhat different animal, one which is (obviously) designed to pack more of a punch.
