Review: 2021 Terrazas de los Andes Extremo Malbec

With Extremo malbec, a new Terrazas de los Andes offering, the winery experiments with the higher altitudes in Argentina’s Uco Valley. Sourced from vineyards almost 5,400 feet high in the Gualtallary subregion, it benefits from sharp temperature fluctuation between day and night, helping to retain acidity while allowing full fruit development. After a small delay, it is now available stateside and we had an opportunity to give it a try

It’s best to check expectations at the door, as the rush of blackberry, blueberry, and violet aromas usually present in malbecs from this region are significantly dialed down, allowing for notes of red fruit, thyme, graphite, and jarilla to share in the aromatic complexity. Decanting this for a minimum of an hour before enjoying is the right call, as it allows for depth to fully develop. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with well-integrated acidity. The tannins are finely textured, providing structure without excess heft. The dark fruit remains at the forefront but continues to be complemented by mineral and herbal accents until elements of vanilla and cinnamon powder on the finish bring things to a beautiful, soft landing.

Watching winemakers consider and experiment with terroir rather than adhering to old-guard expectations has been a rewarding experience, and it is one that die-hard and casual wine drinkers alike have found to deliver something new that doesn’t rely on marketing gimmicks. Rather than emphasizing the brutish power commonly associated with the region, Terrazas de los Andes showcases clarity and refinement, highlighting the promise and potential of Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards. For those seeking a malbec with balance and nuance, electing to uncork this would prove a compelling option. A single lot (72 bottles, 12 magnums) recently sold at a charity auction for $500,000. So if you see it on the shelves at your local shop, and if you’re looking to indulge in something special, this might be one you want to pick up. You may not have another opportunity to do so, as it easily stands toe to toe with any of the elite wines currently on offer from Argentina. Absolutely lovely stuff.
