Review: Rombauer 2020 Chardonnay and 2019 Zinfandel

The 2020 edition of Rombauer’s famous chardonnay has arrived. We review it here alongside a new zinfandel release.

2020 Rombauer Chardonnay Carneros – One of California’s most iconic chardonnays is renowned for its oakiness, and with this 2020 expression the reputation initially feels earned. Bright apple notes are paired with coconut and some sesame oil on a creamy body, with ample vanilla showing on the finish. That said, with some airtime in glass and a bit of warming up, the wine tempers nicely, letting its oaky qualities mellow out. A- / $40 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]

2019 Rombauer Zinfandel California – Extremely dense and extracted, this zinfandel feels like it’s been bubbling around in an oak vat for years. The results are even more powerful than you’d expect, a flood of blackberry jam, pureed raisins, and chocolate sauce turning out an almost syrupy finished product. It’s as sweet as any Port I’ve tried; save this one for dessert. B- / $38 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
