Review: Sierra Nevada Cryo Fresh Torpedo and Celebration Fresh Hop IPA (2022)
Two new releases from California’s Sierra Nevada — a no-longer-experimental IPA, new to the market, and a seasonal essential. Let’s go!
Sierra Nevada Cryo Fresh Torpedo Wet Hop IPA – This IPA is made by flash freezing wet hops at harvest, thus perfectly (presumably) preserving them for the time when they’re used to make beer. Cryo hopping has been done before, but Sierra says this is the first time it’s been done on a national release. It sure seems to get the job done: The fruity and piney hoppy flavors are intense, notes of apple and mango both dominant on the lush, silky palate. Just a lick of sweetness and a squeeze of lemon peel on the refreshing, cleansing finish. Great stuff. 7% abv. A / $8 per six-pack
Sierra Nevada Celebration Fresh Hop IPA (2022) – The Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hop recipe doesn’t change much here year to year, so fans of this “drink it fresh” seasonal will find this a familiar offering. Lots of malt gives this a big caramel construction, the hops very grassy and, as is often the case, a bit muddy and mushroomy. Denser in body than the typical IPA, it’s more appropriate for wintertime sipping than many beers of the style, a chewy, creamy quality helping the finish stick around for ages. 6.8% abv. B+ / $10 per six-pack [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
