Two new releases from Napa’s iconic Robert Mondavi Winery have just arrived. Let’s dive in.

2019 Robert Mondavi Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley – Initially on the green side, in fact a bit bitter, this wine never quite develops beyond its roots as a grassy, lemon peel-driven experience, culminating in a finish that is heavy on saline and minerals, but without any real fruit to back up the acidity. The finish feels doughy and rather tough, chewy instead of vibrant and refreshing. Needs a meal to counter its surprising depth and gravity. B / $35

2018 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon The Estates Oakville – One of the most beautiful cabernets I’ve seen in ages, perfectly ripe, showcasing currants, plums, cherries, and spice all in a mix — half red, half black fruit. Balanced deftly on the edge of the knife, the wine weaves its way between fruit and florals, sweet and sour, before eventually landing on notes of semi-sweet chocolate, tea leaf, and a slight amaro note giving the finish some lovely bitterness.
