Review: Maestro Dobel 50 Silver Oak Tequila

Maestro Dobel is back again with another ultra-luxe tequila bottling in the Dobel 50 lineup, this one called Dobel 50 Silver Oak. The concept this time around takes a 100% agave extra anejo Lowlands tequila and finishes it in Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels. As far as production details go, that’s about all we have.

Let’s see how it fares.

The wine influence makes a modest but noticeable impact on the nose, lending notes of raisins, peppery spice, and cinnamon to an undercoat of pastry dough and lemon curd. That pepper begins to showcase some greener agave elements with time in glass, but they’re mild and well-integrated with the more festive aromatics in the mix. The palate shows off more of the same, lip-smackingly sweet but held up against a body that feels rather doughy, with an almost gummy texture at times. Some citrus builds on a core that evokes cinnamon sugar, caramel, vanilla, and lingering nutmeg elements — all hallmarks of classic extra anejo tequilas — though the wine influence recedes quite severely at this point. The conclusion leaves behind notes of coconut, muddled into vanilla syrup.

All told it presents itself like many an extra anejo — which is to say, it’s mostly a sugar bomb in the end. I certainly didn’t mind drinking it… but $1100 seems awfully extreme.

80 proof. NOM 1122.
