Review: Bowmore Masters’ Selection 22 Years Old Aston Martin Edition
Bowmore’s latest limited edition release is a celebration of its partnership with automaker Aston Martin. This 22 year old bottling comes in two parts, distilled in 1997 and 2000, and aged in American oak hogsheads and sherry butts, respectively, which makes the oldest whiskey in this bottle a full quarter century in age.
We received a small sample for review, so let’s dig in.
Old Bowmore is always the best Bowmore, but this expression offers something a little out of the ordinary. Particularly, its smoke comes across as a bit muted in comparison to the classic representation of the whisky, evoking a complex mix of tea leaf and mild creosote before a fragrant fruit note emerges. Think overripe peach, mixed with banana. Lively and inviting, this leads to a soft and surprisingly fruit-forward palate, with notes of tangerine and black tea countered by hints of chimney soot. The finish sees a light saline quality alongside more fruit and hints of sesame, plus a touch of graphite.
I don’t know how much impact the car company had in the creation of this top shelf whiskey, but I’m willing to assume it had a hand in everything.
