Review: 2020 Frescobaldi Pomino Bianco DOC

Review: 2020 Frescobaldi Pomino Bianco DOC

Italy’s Frescobaldi makes a huge range of wines, but its most approachable, summery white wine is arguably Pomino, made from a blend of chardonnay and pinot bianco harvested in Tuscany.

With Pomino, it feels you’re getting the best of both the chardonnay and pinot bianco worlds: Crisp minerality paired with a depth of fruit that approaches apple butter — dialed back with a healthy squeeze of grapefruit and white grape must. Slightly doughy with an edge of vanilla, especially on the finish, the wine’s floral elements come into clearer focus here, especially as things warm up a little. Fortunately there’s ample acidity to keep the whole affair together, making it a perfect dinnertime pairing while working well as an aperitif.
