Review: Herminia Riojas – 2018 Crianza and 2017 Reserva

Vina Herminia is a Rioja-based wine brand that was named in honor of Herminia Casas, an entrepreneur and women’s education activist in the early 20th century. A female pioneer in the wine biz, these wines are designed to honor her memory. And apparently, she liked really huge reds.

2018 Herminia Rioja Crianza DOC – Surprisingly rich for a Crianza, this bottling — aged for 12 months in both American and French oak — leans heavily on its darker elements, showcasing notes of anise and dark chocolate, touched with elements of orange peel and a light dusting of mint. Brooding and rich on the finish, it’s a very expressive and dark expression that subverts expectations against the typical Crianza Rioja. A- / $18

2017 Herminia Rioja Reserva DOC – Equally pushy, this wine, 24 months in barrel, is heavier on red fruits — cherries and raspberries — before letting a more brooding blackcurrant character into the picture. Chocolate is particularly bold on the finish, again showing a bit of anise. There’s a lot in common between the two wines, the only significant difference being a richer, more immersive texture on the Reserva. A- / $20
