Review: Glenfiddich Perpetual Collection Vat 03 15 Years Old
Glenfiddich’s duty free/travel retail lineup is designated its “Perpetual Collection,” as all of the whiskies in the lineup (four to date) are aged in solera vats. How many solera vats — which are constantly refilled, leaving some percentage of older stock behind — does Glenfiddich have? I’ve only seen the one — which is used for its iconic Solera Reserve edition, but things are certainly prone to change in the world of whisky.
Vat 03 is one of only two whiskies in the Perpetual Collection to carry an age statement, this one being 15 years old (same as Solera Reserve). I was curious enough to pick one up at Heathrow last month. Let’s see how this fares.
The bright shade of orange immediately cues you to the heavily sherried quality in this release, and the nose is indeed quite aggressive: Nutty, citrusy, but also gently beefy around the edges. There’s a bold orange peel quality on the palate that evokes sweet marmalade, soon giving way to notes of jasmine and tea cookies. But that sherry-driven orange quality is what dominates just about everything, fueling the whisky well into a finish which is almost candylike with notes of caramel sauce and vanilla. A little one-note, but a solid experience and not a bad deal.
100.4 proof.
