Review: Milam & Greene Bottled in Bond Bourbon

Well, would ya look at that? Our pals at Milam & Greene have released their first bonded whiskey, a permanent addition to the portfolio that is distilled in Bardstown, Kentucky (this one in Autumn 2019), aged in #4 char barrels in Kentucky, then bottled in Blanco, Texas (just a few months ago for this first batch). The mashbill is 70% corn, 22% malted rye, and 8% malted barley. As is the case with any bonded whiskey, the finished product must be at least 4 years old and bottled at 50% abv. 72 barrels of this inaugural release were produced.

As with virtually all of M&G’s Kentucky-born whiskeys, this one is expressive and seductive, offering a nose up-front of honey grahams, caramel, and malted milk balls, all tempered by a robust but never overwhelming barrel char element. Dark chocolate emerges if you allow some airtime and really breathe deeply.

A zippy palate continues the above but lets rye do more of the talking: Bolder notes of red pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and a layer of honey to keep the experience gently sweetened. A creamy body evokes unbaked cookie dough, weighted with notes of vanilla custard. Clean on the finish, moderate in length, with some floral hints dusting the experience.

Another solid effort from Milam & Greene — and unlike many of the whiskeys we see from the operation, this one’s going to be much more readily available… and affordable.

100 proof.
