Review: Eins Zwei Zero Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Blanc de Blancs and Riesling
These non-alcoholic sparkling wines, like many, are made in Germany (these hail from the Rüdesheim region) and sold stateside by online merchant The Zero Proof. Curiously, while the first wine on the list is bottled with a crown cap, the second has a Champagne-style cork to contend with. Otherwise, we don’t have a whole lot of information aside from general production info, which blends dealcoholized wine with grape must and fizzes it up after the fact. More details and commentary follow.
Eins Zwei Zero Sparkling Blanc de Blancs – Dealcoholized wine of unstated varietals, blended with grape must and carbonated. Fresh and fruity — and featuring plenty of fizz — this is an effusive exploration of white grapes, green apples, and lemon zest, touched with lime zest on the fade-out. A bit on the sweet side but decidedly refreshing and balanced with acidity, this is a straightforward and unabashed crowd-pleaser that could be easily mistaken for any mid-level sparkling white. No complaints. B+ / $22
Eins Zwei Zero Sparkling Riesling – Same approach as noted above, only this is 100% riesling, not a blend. Semi-sweet in style with a moderate fizz, it approximates an inexpensive riesling on the tongue, with notes of white grape balanced by honey and just a hint of racy petrol. The sweetness is moderated but present, creating a refreshing and crushable experience that finishes clean. Again, nothing overly complex, but it’s at least fun to pick out some of the riesling varietal character that has made it through dealcoholization. A- / $22
