Review: Tequila Corralejo Anejo

Review: Tequila Corralejo Anejo

We’ve covered both blanco and reposado expressions from Highlands-area Corralejo, as well as the rare Corralejo 1821 extra anejo expression, in the past. Today we finally fill in the final gap with Tequila Corralejo Anejo, which spends 12 months in oak before bottling.

Very light in color, this anejo is equally light in aroma, offering a gentle nose of brown sugar, cracked pepper, and a smattering of fresh herbs — though everything is kept very simple and quiet. The palate is a bit more aggressive, with clearer black and red pepper notes, a darker caramel note vs. the lighter brown sugar evident on the nose, and a citrus note that adds acidity to the mix. Soothing and easygoing, the tequila is generally mild from the start, though the finish does see some lingering heat and a pinch of vegetal agave.

If you’re looking for an anejo that’s fairly uncomplicated and which you can gulp down with near impunity, without fear of a fiery backlash, Corralejo certainly fits the bill.

80 proof.
