Review: Papa’s Pilar Platinum Blonde Rum and Bourbon Barrel Finished Rum
The Hemingway-authorized Papa’s Pilar rum brand has recently released two seasonal, limited edition rums for you cocktailing pleasure. Both are available in rather small quantities, so snap them up if they sound appealing.
Papa’s Pilar Platinum Blonde Rum – This is a Cuban-style rum crafted from five aged rums in the Papa’s collection. Boldly fruity with banana and coconut notes, there’s a slight edge of petrol that is counterbalanced by a modest butterscotch note, giving it ample sweetness. The palate is similar, but a little whiskeylike, the coconut notes paired nicely with vanilla, caramel, and milk chocolate notes. There’s a touch of heat here, but it’s quite soothing and sippable, leading to a fresh, lively, and slightly tropical finish. The chewy body lingers on the tongue for some time, with adds to an overall pleasant experience. 2000 cases produced. 92 proof. A- / $35
Papa’s Pilar Bourbon Barrel Finished Rum – While almost all rum is aged in bourbon barrels, this one spends “extra time” in bourbon casks (perhaps a second cask, hence the “finish” on the label) and is bottled at a higher abv. The difference is palpable, with a bold nose of coffee and dark chocolate offering a rich, unctuous, and somewhat woodsy aroma. The palate finds plenty of action to back that up. Moderately sweet, the chocolate notes kick into overdrive here, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla all in the mix. There’s a slight sherry wine component evident as well, giving it a layer of oxidized fruit. It all leads to a finish that is lengthy and rich, with lingering notes of toasted coconut and spice. 95 proof. A- / $45 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
