Review: Nik Weis 2019 Urban Riesling and 2018 Wiltinger Kabinett
Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof is a riesling winery in Germany’s Mosel region. Thanks to its gentle sweetness, hearty body, and low alcohol level, riesling is a great choice for white wine for cooler months. Today we take a look at two of Weis’s new bottlings, both available fore $20 or less.
2019 Nik Weis Mosel Urban Riesling – Quite honeyed and sweet up front, with lots of perfume to give the experience a decidedly floral element. It has the hallmarks of riesling all in place, but it doesn’t quite come together in a balanced way, its sweetness, nuttiness, and potpourri notes hitting the palate with a certain blunt character. The finish leaves behind a slick of chamomile-infused honey that weighs rather heavily on the tongue. B / $14
2018 Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Wiltinger Kabinett – Wiltingen is a village in the Saar Valley, and this is, as such, a Wiltinger. There’s a lot of honey and lemon in this wine — and a bit more sweetness than I would expect from a Kabinett-class bottling — though it pairs fine with a bold enough, or acidity-laced meal. Hints of guava, pineapple, and some tiki-spice elements give this a New World composition, but there’s so much effusive fruit that it’s tough to be upset in the slightest. A- / $20
