Review: Sun King Brewery Polynesian Passion and Hop Tickler
Two new seasonal beers from Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewery. Who’s ready?
Sun King Brewery Polynesian Passion – This is a monstrous Belgian tripel, barrel-aged and spiced with tiki elements that include pineapple, orange, and coconut. You can taste all of the above on the ultra-sweet and extremely spicy palate, which runs from pineapple candy to coconut cream to raisin-soaked cinnamon toast. A little of this goes an awfully long way, and the finish can quickly get overwhelming with sugar. Consider the pint-sized aluminum bottles this comes in as meant for sharing — with two other people. 13% abv. B+ / $NA per 16 oz aluminum bottle
Sun King Brewery Hop Tickler – This seasonal IPA is made with Mandarina and Citra hops, plus a little wheat in the mash bill. Just the slightest bit hazy and featuring a healthy head of foam, the beer has a somewhat unusual flavor profile that evokes notes of guava, lemon, and coconut all at once. The wheat in the mix boosts the creaminess of the body, enhancing its tropical characteristics significantly. Fun stuff, but unexpected. 6.1% abv. B+ / $NA per six-pack
