Review: Barrell Bourbon Batch 30
Barrell Bourbon Batch 30 has arrived, marking yet another milestone for the bourbon blending behemoth. At this point, we could fill a whole bar with only Barrell Bourbon batch releases (maybe we already have), and we honestly wouldn’t complain about the selection, despite almost all of these releases being some mix of bourbons from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. For its 30th blend, however, Barrell is throwing a bit of a curveball at us with the addition of sourced bourbon stocks from Wyoming, whiskey heretofore only featured in the 2021 New Year release. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong there.) Let’s see how that changeup compares to the batches that came before, shall we?
Another big aroma here, but punctuated by unique, toasty wood notes that come across almost like a cognac with sultry fruit notes: roasted fig, syrupy black cherry, and stewed cinnamon apples. On the palate, there’s an initial rush of creamy sweetness that evokes milky chai tea and caramel latte, followed by a big, warm hug of butterscotch, toasted coconut, and poached pears. The finish is all Almond Joy with a generous helping of cinnamon sugar and lingering, oily notes of orange blossom honey. Not to say that these batches had ever gotten boring, but it’s nice to see that the Barrell team can still surprise us. Another solid edition to the home Barrell bar.
